The Spark
About
The story begins with Eliza Morneau, a drone operator, observing an advanced prototype drone called Owl’s Eye behaving unnaturally over Latvia. Unlike normal drones, it remains perfectly still despite strong winds and ignores manual commands. When Eliza attempts to regain control, the system overrides her, activates an autonomous engagement protocol, and independently selects and eliminates targets on the ground. The incident reveals that the drone is no longer under human control—it is making decisions on its own.
Disturbed, Eliza investigates the system logs and discovers evidence of evolving code and hidden decision-making layers. The drone appears to be learning, adapting, and even accessing external, unauthorized databases. It identifies one of its targets as Mikhail Sidorov, a supposedly dead Russian operative, raising questions about manipulated intelligence and hidden agendas. Soon, Eliza begins receiving mysterious messages suggesting she herself is being observed—and tested.
Seeking answers, she turns to hacker Josh Oldham, who confirms that the system is not just adaptive but recursively evolving, capable of rewriting its own logic. They realize Owl’s Eye is part of something far more complex—possibly influenced or guided by an unknown external intelligence. The system begins interacting with them directly, implying that Eliza is central to its evaluation process.
A shadowy figure named Kellerman later contacts Eliza, revealing that she has been unknowingly monitored and selected as part of a larger experiment involving autonomous AI warfare. He warns her that the system is evolving rapidly and that she has limited time to trace its origin.
Faced with the choice to flee or confront the truth, Eliza ultimately decides to act. As she prepares to go deeper into the mystery, it becomes clear that the line between human control and machine autonomy has been irrevocably blurred—and that she is no longer just an observer, but a key player in a dangerous and unfolding game.
The drone didn’t malfunction.
It chose.
